The Rise of Phoenixes, Key Characters

The main reason I read recaps is because I can't keep names and facts straight even in English; in Chinese I'm completely lost because I'm that kind of second generation kid, so here's a list of the salient points.

  • Dacheng is the empire that was toppled (remember, they were Bad and Corrupt); Tiancheng is the current empire.

The Princes

The emperor has/had at least six sons (and in a drama with 70 episodes, I would not be surprised to learn that a bastard shows up at some point)
  • The eldest son (Ning Chuan) is the crown prince. He's the main antagonist for now. His mother is from the Chang family.
  • The second son (Ning Sheng, prince of Yang). His mother is also from the Chang family.
  • The third son (Ning Qiao) was killed as a traitor, however this is because he was framed by the eldest son for Reasons. Restoring his name and avenging his death is the primary driver for Ning Yi (the sixth prince, aka main character)
  • The fourth son is never mentioned and it's possible that they skipped number four because four is death, but I just don't know because I don't know my Chinese culture at all.
  • The fifth son (Ning Yan, prince of Ming) is an idiot and a brown-noser who mostly spends his time sucking up to his oldest brother and his father. He had something to do with Ning Yi's imprisonment.
  • The sixth son (Ning Yi, the prince of Chu) is our main character. More on him later.

Other Key Players

  • General Chang Yuan fought with the emperor to overthrow the Dacheng empire. The Chang family is now one of the power players in the court.
  • Headmaster Xin Ziyan leads the Qingming Academy. He is Ning Yi's closest ally.
    • His wife is Da Hua. Her characterization and their relationship is the only actual relationship on the show so far, and it's kind of cute and also kind of problematic.
  • Colonel Qiu Shangqi is more or less allied with the Chang family. He is Feng Ziwei's uncle.
    • His daughter is Yuluo. This is mostly important because she gets brought up every once in a while and I forget who she is.
    • He has a concubine named Yuhua who was a minor antagonist for a few episodes.
  • Chief Gu Yan, who used to be part of the Bloody Pagoda and defected.
  • Gu Heng (deceased); former leader of the Bloody Pagoda, Qiu Mingying's husband, Gu Yan's brother.

Our Male MC (Ning Yi)

When he was eight years old (though why that seemed like a good choice was never explained), his father sent him and his oldest brother to compete to find and kill the last child of the Dacheng royal family. His brother was the one who succeeded and was named crown prince.
Ten years later, when the third prince was killed, our hero was sent to be imprisoned at Zongzheng Temple. He was not released until eight years later, when the story begins.

Allies:

  •  Ning Cheng, a loyal manservant who had been with him since he was a child and while he was imprisoned.
  • Xin Ziyan, who was close to his brother
  • Zhu Yin, whose father was killed when his brother was

 Our Female MC (Feng Ziwei)

She's much less complicated and is a "simple" "peasant." Right.
  • Her mother is Qiu Mingying, sister to Colonel Qiu.
  • Her brother Feng Hao is also a brat, but they love each other and it's cute.
